About the Project

ÃÛÌÒÇι«Ö÷ and G70 are collaborating on the design-build $31.6 million 17,500-square-foot Regional Kitchen – North Central Oahu project. Located in Wahiawa, the innovative regional kitchen is the first of its kind in Hawaii and is at the leading edge of a statewide effort to modernize school food service and enable a smarter, more efficient way to provide healthier food for students. The Hawaii Department of Education (DOE)’s new facility will produce a minimum of 9,000 meals per day for schools in the Leilehua, Mililani and Waialua Complex areas. The kitchen facility consists of various zones for meal cooking, preparation, assembly, storage, loading and utility. The project also includes an employee area which features a multi-purpose staff room, conference room, restroom, lockers and offices.

Located adjacent to Agribusiness Development Corporation Food Hub facilities, the project supports the statewide goal of serving 30% locally sourced food in public schools by 2030. The facility is designed and constructed to allow for future expansion.

About the Project

The University of Washington (UW) Interdisciplinary Engineering Building (IEB) project in Seattle, WA, provides 72,000 SF of hands-on learning and flexible instructional space, supporting over 950 new students across ten academic departments with offices and wet and dry modular labs. The IEB houses programming for leadership, diversity and access and provides dedicated space for student clubs and industry-sponsored capstone projects, strengthening connections between the University of Washington and industry partners.

The ÃÛÌÒÇι«Ö÷ and Kieran Timberlake progressive design-build team delivered the building to showcase the UW’s commitment to advancing engineering education and research. The progressive design-build team built the IEB on an extremely constrained, hillside site within an active university campus of over 40,000 students.

Innovative construction solutions and careful coordination addressed the site’s challenges and minimized disruption to campus life, resulting in over $700k in project savings. The IEB project demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability, achieving LEED Gold certification through a combination of innovative design strategies and thoughtful construction practices. The team worked through massing options that utilized the 60-ft elevation change across the site to their advantage, effectively meeting access/egress and ADA requirements. For example, due to the constrained site location, the team invested in the use of a tele belt to save on trucking costs, increase overall safety and maximize the use of a nearby parking lot.

Ultimately, through the power of progressive design-build, the team delivered a landmark facility that now serves as a vibrant gateway to the university’s engineering department, welcoming innovation, collaboration, and the next generation of engineers.

About the Project

The Resnick Sustainability Center (RSC) is a modern, flexible research building that supports and expands the research work of the Resnick Sustainability Institute (RSI). It hosts facilities for four of the RSI’s research centers: 1) an Ecology and Biosphere Engineering Facility, 2) a Solar Science and Catalysis Center, 3) a Remote Sensing Center and 4) a Translational Science Facility for pilot testing at scale.

Caltech had several key goals for the RSC:

1) To be a hub for sustainability research and education

2) To bring together scientists, engineers, students and faculty to foster collaboration and innovation

3) To provide state-of-the-art facilities and specialized equipment to support groundbreaking research in sustainability

4) To serve as an educational resource, offering teaching laboratories and shared meeting spaces

5) To incorporate advanced sustainable technologies and materials

The RSC incorporates numerous advanced sustainability features, including a high-performance exterior envelope, a fully glazed north atrium and western façade that maximizes natural light, solar shading fins that reduce heat gain, highly energy-efficient mechanical and electrical systems and a striking mass timber frame that reduces embodied carbon. Outside, rooftop photovoltaic arrays generate power for research and operations, while native plantings and stormwater dry wells increase the building’s sustainability.

About the Project

The Fawcett Elementary School project in Tacoma, WA, includes the design and construction of a replacement elementary school on the existing site of the current school. The project includes demolition of the existing 64,000 SF facility and construction of a new 55,000 SF two-story building to house approximately 400 students. Delivered in partnership with Tacoma-based design firm BLRB Architects, the progressive design-build project provides a new parking lot, covered and paved play areas and an all-purpose field. Fawcett presents challenges related to the fast-track construction of the new facility on the small, 5.6-acre site that has sloping topography and is surrounded by dense, single-family residential neighborhoods on all sides. The project uses signage as teaching moments throughout the building. Examples include entry art that welcomes students in over ten languages and a timeline of Tacoma’s history.

The ÃÛÌÒÇι«Ö÷ and BLRB team worked closely with Tacoma Public Schools to increase both local business participation from 30% to 54% and overall business equity inclusion goals.

About the Project

The Girl Scouts of Hawaii Camp Paumalu STEM Center for Excellence project consists of a new two-story, 11,630 SF wood-framed structure on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. The center features a commercial kitchen, computer lab, classroom laboratories, dining hall, restroom/shower house, health center and laundry facility. The open-air concept flows between two large lanais, a welcome lobby and a covered walkway leading to the pre-engineered metal storage building. The facility will provide year-round opportunities in cybersecurity, astronomy, robotics, computer coding, botany, chemistry and environmental stewardship to the Girl Scouts of Hawaii.

The majority of the labor force was comprised of personnel from the Innovative Readiness Training (IRT) program. The IRT is a Department of Defense military training opportunity for Active, Guard and Reserve servicemembers to support a nonprofit in building and increasing deployment readiness.
